Girls Lacrosse Program Recap – Fall 2017 through June 2018
Hello lacrosse families. Over recent years, the youth lacrosse programs in the area have multiplied with many opportunities for training and play for a variety of skill levels. We want to provide some details regarding timing and details amongst these different programs.
The basic type of programs currently available in the area are: Town Based Travel Teams, Town Based Recreation Teams, Modified School Teams, and Private Club Teams.
Town Based Travel Teams – this program for girls’ grades 5-8 is provided by the Greeley Youth Lacrosse Association (GYL) in Chappaqua. Registration is currently open for the 2017-2018 program. We hold registration now so that we can plan appropriate programs for the number of players registered. Girls travel teams are grade based. The Hudson Valley Lacrosse League, of which GYL is part of, combines the girls’ teams by grade level – 5th-6th grade and 7th-8th grade. Those players registered will be evaluated in November to determine proper roster size. GYL is holding optional lacrosse clinics this fall for grades 3-8 (see website for details). These are included in the registration fee. The spring season runs for approximately 8 weeks from early to mid April through early June. Teams meet 3 times a week for practices and games – twice during the week and once on Saturdays. In addition, the teams will compete in 3-4 tournaments during weekends in the spring. There will likely be some team practices in March as well. Note that the 7-8 team will coordinate the season with the Modified School Team schedule so that players will be able to play for both teams if they choose (for example – scheduling any games only on Saturdays during modified season).
Town Based Recreation Teams - this program is for girls grades K-6 and also provided by GYL in Chappaqua. The 7th-8th grade recreation program is now replaced with the school modified team (see below). Registration is currently open for the 2017-2018 program. We hold registration now so that we can plan appropriate programs for the number of players registered. Girls recreation teams are grade based:
K – Sundays in spring only
1-2 – Sundays in spring only
3-4 & 5-6 - Generally, teams meet 3 times a week for practices and games – twice during the week and once on Saturdays. In addition, the 3-4 team will compete in some tournaments during weekends in the spring.
All registered GYL players in grades 3-8 are welcome to attend the fall clinics described above. Also the spring season for recreation teams runs for approximately 8 weeks from early to mid April through early June.
Modified School Team(s) – this program for girls’ grades 7-8 is provided and run by the school district. Last year was the first year in many that the program was run and only one team for both schools was created due to the number of players who registered. This program runs after school Monday through Friday for the spring sports season – typically March through early May. GYL coordinates the 7-8 travel program schedule around the Modified program so girls can play both teams if desired.
Private Club Teams – many exist in the area. Currently many are holding or have held tryouts for the upcoming year. These teams usually have a medium time commitment fall program with practices and a couple of tournaments, light or medium winter training commitment, very light early spring commitment as the club teams want their players to play for their town travel teams, and intense late spring – summer commitments.
We hope this information is helpful in helping to determine your family’s lacrosse choices in the coming year. Please go to the GYL website http://greeleyyouthlacrosse.com/ for further program information and to register your player for the 2017-2018 season.
